AnnotationCan we - dare we - risk real communication with the person with dementia? This article is an edited version of the first Tom Kitwood Memorial Address given at the Dementia Care '99 conferences in Glasgow and Leeds, in which the author considers the question from three points of view. First, why we should risk - the ethical answer. Second, how we can risk - the technical answer. Third, who will support the risk-taking - the resource answer. She argues that we are morally bound to use and develop all our knowledge, skills and feelings in the cause of person-centred communication. (RH).
