AnnotationThe value of purposeful recreational activity as a means of promoting well-being in people with dementia is now firmly established. Among the newer therapeutic approaches that may be used for people with moderate or severe dementia are play-based activities. These include games, experiences and toys that are normally associated with young children. The use of such activities is controversial: proponents believe that they are a useful way of enhancing well-being, while opponents feel that they demean older people and are undignified. Describing their own group work and its evaluation, the authors argue that people with advanced dementia gain cognitive security, and may not see such activities as "play" in the same way as we do.
