AnnotationDementia care mapping (DCM) developed by Tom Kitwood, Kathleen Bredin, and the Bradford Dementia Group has now emerged as the audit tool of choice in assessing the quality of care for people with dementia in formal care settings. Structural observation in terms of engaged or disengaged behaviours has been practised for a number of years. This method is based on the simple assumption that if people are engaged (interacting) with their environment, they are likely to be leading a more satisfying life than those who are disengaged. Dawn Brooker proposes that combining the methodologies of DCM and engagement can provide a reliable indicator of quality of care, useful in inspection of services and research. Engagement data could also be used to enrich data from a routine DCM evaluation. (RH).
