AnnotationFor people in the early stages of dementia, dance movement therapy (DMT) can liberate strong emotions aroused by awareness of their symptoms, and stimulate discussion in a supported environment. The authors describe their 10-week programme, the aims of which include increased mobility and use of spontaneous movement. Four participants' case studies illustrate how they felt emotionally empowered to express themselves. Recent work on dementia care mapping and psychomotor therapy in the Netherlands has indicated that it is possible to measure the benefits of DMT for those with severe dementia, and that further work is merited.
