Annotation | The UK launch of Aricept in 1998 was widely publicised. Although the media were careful to point out the known limitations of Aricept's effects, there was concern that learning about the new treatment from TV and newspapers could create false hopes amongst carers and relatives of people with dementia. However, most carers' expectations of Aricept were found to be consistent with the clinical information they had been given. Carers also reported a number of Aricept-related improvements in their spouses' condition and some improvement in their own well-being and the quality of care they gave. Knowing that their spouse was being treated and having greater hope were highly valued by the carers interviewed. (RH). |
