Annotation | Art therapy is the use of painting, drawing, sculpture or other visual media by an individual to further his or her emotional and mental well-being. The therapy is carried out by qualified art therapists, who are trained in both art and psychotherapy. The author describes a multidisciplinary pilot project to objectively evaluate the effects of art therapy on a group of older patients with dementia over a ten week period. Cognitive tests and observational assessments carried out by independent raters demonstrated that people with dementia do respond to art therapy, as evidenced by decreased levels of depression and improved mood. A proposal has been submitted and funding sought for the project's next phase. (RH). |
