AnnotationThe NHS mental health service in Fife has been subject to many changes, mainly due to service reorganisation in 1999. Joint planning and work with social services was, on the whole, good but variable. Considerable disparity was found in quality of health service provision, with examples of excellent practice, contrasting with parts of the service which were under-resourced and struggling. A major concern was the pressure on the Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit, much due to admissions from outside Fife. Other problems were poor hospital environments and low staffing. Gaps in the service included lack of old age psychiatry in North East Fife. Recommendations are made concerning future service and policy planning, and nurse and consultant psychiatrist recruitment.
