AnnotationThis study aimed to estimate the point prevalence of incontinence in residential care homes and nursing homes in Liverpool and to collect information about care policies relating to the assessment and management of incontinence in such homes. A postal questionnaire was distributed to 84 residential and nursing homes, of whom 57 responded. The mean prevalence for any type of incontinence was higher in the nursing homes than in the residential care homes. Only a third of older residents suffering from incontinence had a bladder chart completed. More nursing homes than residential homes reported having a home-based programme or strategy to help with the management of incontinence. There appeared to be reluctance to seek advice from a specialist nursing service, such as the continence service. An annual audit of the prevalence of incontinence is recommended. (AKM).
