AnnotationThe treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) may be said to represent a potent threat to self-identity. This article explores the treatment of patients with AD in a residential setting, analysing attempts by the institution to impose structure and control upon daily life. The routines developed are variously studied in terms of the organisation of space, infantilisation and the denial of personhood, and the management of incontinence. The article concludes with a call for the rehumanisation of older people with AD, strengthening rather than diminishing selfhood in old age. (RH).
