Annotation | This is by way of a foreword to a special issue of Education and Ageing on the theme of ageing and identity. Arguments are developed concerning the value of social theory for educational gerontology, and the importance of identity as a central theme within gerontological studies. In general, the approach taken is that current developments in social theory (as illustrated in the other articles) indicate some promising lines of development for those concerned concerned with the broad field of educational gerontology.
