AnnotationIn this US study, individuals with the diagnosis "probable Alzheimer's disease" at two residential care facilities participated in an activities programme involving charades. Residents were asked to identify the animal, sport, musical instrument, shape, or action that was indicated by gestures of the investigator. Results indicate that the game was an enjoyable activity, particularly when it included tangible rewards as positive reinforcers. Furthermore, some participants who performed poorly during the initial sessions demonstrated memory of charade gestures over several weeks of testing. The findings suggest that charades may tap intact procedural memories for gestures that may or may not require activation of explicit memories, depending on the modality of response required of the participants.
