AnnotationResearch on older people's mobility has involved closely monitored interventions in group settings. Little research is available on home-based programmes, as tested by the authors in this investigation of an exercise programme targeting balance and mobility, for which changes in psychological well-being in healthy, active older people were assessed. 20 women (mean age 83.2 years, range 73-92) volunteered: 6 non-exercise controls, 7 completing an 8-week programme, and 7 dropping out. The three groups did not differ on any measures at pre-test. At post-test, exercisers and non-exercisers did not differ on balance, mobility or psychological measures, but differences for preferred walking speed and step length approached significance. Pre-post comparisons indicated that exercisers significantly increased their activity levels, walked faster and were stronger following the intervention. Although there were no great differences for outcome measures, participants commented on the usefulness of the training tasks. Their proficiency and confidence improved, and they provided information for modifying the training tasks. Results demonstrate the potential of home-based exercise programmes for improving and maintaining older people's mobility. (RH).
