AnnotationTrustees of the Nuffield Foundation considered establishing a new grant programme on ageing, which was launched in 1999 under the title "Older people and their families". To inform the planning of the programme, the author was commissioned to carry out a review of significant work being undertaken in the UK and elsewhere. This published, revised version comprises an overview of the ageing centres and other gerontological organisations, current research themes and funders. The author concludes that despite developments over the past 30 years, key issues remain unresolved within British ageing research in the social sciences. The subject area continues to be dominated by social policy and health care service and delivery. Unlike the National Institute on Aging in the US, the UK does not have a separate governmental agency for co-ordinating research on ageing issues. (RH).
