AnnotationThe Community Care (Direct Payments) Act 1996 came into force on 1 April 1997. This policy and practice guidance sets out the Government's view of what local authorities should do if they choose to exercise power given to them by the Act. Social services departments will be able to make direct cash payments to some individuals in lieu of community care services they have been assessed as needing, to enable them to secure for themselves the relevant services. The practice guide advises on how local authorities might implement the Act. This policy and guidance now replaces that which was issued in 1997. Additionally, there are now two annexes: A: Care plan for direct payments and B: Further information. (KJ/RH).
