AnnotationOf 821 over 60s visited by a health visitor, 34 (4%) were inadequately fed: they did not have a main meal except for Meals on Wheels or at a luncheon club. 6.8% had also given up on certain foods because of their cost, and 22% avoided certain foods for "medical reasons". More than half of those were on self-imposed diets, rather than acting on medical advice. Only one subject had altered her diet on medical advice in order to improve her nutrition. For many old age pensioners, price is a barrier to consumption of milk. The authors propose a "Welfare Milk Scheme", with instructions on the greater use of milk in cooking, which could be of considerable value in helping solve problems of undernutrition. (RH).
