AnnotationFocus group discussions were conducted with 24 educated, non-Hispanic white women (aged 65-89) living independently in retirement communities in Virginia. Discussion questions considered preferences for dairy foods, advantages and disadvantages of dairy foods, and ideas for product improvements. Discussions were audiotaped, and written transcripts were made for use in data analysis in which prominent themes were identified. The women thought dairy foods were high in fat. Most knew that dairy foods were a source of calcium, but were unable to identify other nutrients. The benefits of calcium in relation to osteoporosis was discussed. Many of the women used calcium supplements, often on the recommendation of doctors, who were found to have a strong influence on dairy food choices and supplement use. (RH).
