AnnotationEconomic evaluation has become an increasingly important decision-making tool for use in resource allocation, but which often has to rely on models which synthesise data from disparate sources. Thus, some researchers argue that analysts should be aware of the limitations of many models. Meta-analysis provides a family of statistical techniques for combining the results of similar studies. This paper examines the meta-analysis of clinical data in economic studies, and points to issues and considerations that must be taken into account when designing and conducting such a meta-analysis for use in an economic evaluation. The authors investigate whether the standard approaches used in the meta-analysis of clinical data are satisfactory for meeting the demands of economic evaluation, and assess the meta-analysis contained in a sample of economic evaluations identified from the NHS Economic Evaluation Database. Guidance is provided on the appropriate use of meta-analysis for economic evaluations. (RH).
