AnnotationResults of the first round of the SENECA (Survey in Europe on Nutrition and the Elderly, a Concerted Action) project of 1988 were published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1991. The 14 papers in this volume present findings from SENECA's 1993 follow-up study which considers the diet, nutritional status, lifestyle, health and performance of older Europeans. As well as repeating all baseline measurements in nine towns, research sites in the UK and US have joined the project. In addition, new measurements have been included: the physical performance test (PPT); the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS); the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE); an estimated dietary record for all participants; and information on meal patterns and coffee drinking patterns; and additional biochemical measures. The design of the SENECA enables age effects to be better identified. More importantly, the study has the potential to identify diet and lifestyle factors most beneficial to health and longevity.
