AnnotationThis report is almost wholly confined to an interpretation of the evidence concerning the influence of the composition and amount of the diet on the death rate from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease in man. The following indicators are examined: overconsumption of food; dietary fat; dietary carbohydrate; cholesterol; sodium chlorate; dietary fibre; trace elements; and hardness or softness of the water supply. The Committee's findings point to no particular cause or causes of ischaemic heart disease (IHD). However, Professor J Yudkin presents a note of reservation, believing that the report exaggerates the possible role of dietary fat, minimising that of dietary sucrose as a cause of IHD. (RH).
