Annotation | Nutrition has been recognised only recently as an important factor influencing the functional outcome of ageing. This volume of papers from an international workshop examines the relationship between nutrition and the ageing process and offers nutritional guidelines for promoting and sustaining the health and function of older people. The first section presents an overview of the health statistics and eating habits of older people. The second section focuses on physiological changes due to ageing, covering changes in renal, endocrine, and gastrointestinal function, energy metabolism, taste and odour perception, and immune responses, and relates these physiological changes to nutritional status. In the third section, the specific nutritional needs of older people are outlined. The fourth section examines the nutritional factors related to osteoporosis and Alzheimer's disease. In the final section, some practical issues related to the nutrition of older people in institutions and at home are examined. (AKM). |
