AnnotationAlthough providing primary care for an increasing number of older patients, most community physicians have had no geriatric training during their medical education. A survey was carried out to evaluate knowledge about basic health care for older people by physicians in Israel. Responding physicians had an average percent correct of 62% on functional evaluation items and 50% on clinical geriatrics items; 73% would consider a geriatric consultation for matters of institutionalisation, whereas only 23% would consider it for clinical problems of their older patients. There were no differences in results between those who had participated in previous geriatric educational activities and those who had not. The study concluded that training programmes to enhance knowledge of geriatrics should be systematically developed and offered to as many community physicians as possible. (AKM).
