AnnotationThis report is based on the second seminar organised by the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) and the Open University's Centre for Ageing and Biographical Studies (CABS), and held at CPA in October 1996. Three case studies describe ways in which older people have been involved in research as originators of research questions, advisers on methodology, fieldworkers, analysts, or disseminators. First, a study of user involvement at the University of York's Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU) aimed to identify opportunities for older people to have a say in planning and evaluating community care services, and to ascertain which methods of involvement suited their preferences and circumstances. Second, the North Staffordshire Pensioners' Association set up research to look at the "real" living costs of pensioners in Stoke-on-Trent, and published their report, "Life on the margins: hidden poverty and the 'real' cost of living for pensioners". Third, the health survey carried out by the Lewisham Older Women's Network is described. A commentary rounds off these examples of different styles of "participative research". (RH).
