AnnotationBiographical, life history and reminiscence based approaches to health and social care work with older people have become very popular. This work is based on a seminar at the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) in June 1996, organised with the Open University's Centre for Ageing and Biographical Studies (CABS). Three contributors have each developed biographical approaches to research and practice in original and creative ways. Prue Chamberlayne outlines a method of life history interviewing which can empower carers and disabled people, and emphasises the interpretation of meanings and dynamics over the life span. Marie Mills describes a piece of research using a combination of reminiscence and counselling with people with dementia. Knowledge of a past life can continue to contribute to care delivery as people's capabilities change and people experience "loss of personal narrative". Derek Clifford uses a computerised mapping approach to oral and life history work in child care assessment, which can be of value in developing an understanding of the lives of oppressed people. There is a summary of the discussion sessions. (RH).
