Annotation | In Malta, information regarding life expectancy at different ages has been available since 1870. This article discusses trends in ageing and a history of concern for care toward the old infirm in Malta since the 14th century. It outlines the history of provision of philanthropic hospices, state hospices and private enterprise homes. The challenge for the next millennium is of an older population making inroads into health and social resources, when Malta's only sustainable resource is its workforce. (RH). |
