AnnotationProtein-calorie malnutrition is common in older people in institutions. In this French study, the authors compared the nutritional status at day 0 and at day 60 for 88 residents aged 65 and over. Following supplementation, those most at risk of malnutrition increased their weight by an average 1.4 kilos. Oral nutrition supplements are well-accepted and result in increased daily protein and energy intake, body weight and nutritional status in most malnourished patients and in those at risk of malnutrition. The mini-nutritional assessment test is useful for both nutritional screening and follow-up assessment. (RH).
