AnnotationIn Lewisham, women aged 60 and over make up around 11% of the borough's population. They spend a large part of their time at home, which is important in enabling them to maintain their independence. However, older people also tend to be the largest group living in unfit housing or lacking basic amenities. The housing research project begun by the Older Women's Network (OWN) was based on two questionnaires, one for homeowners, the other for sheltered housing tenants. 203 older women were interviewed personally or returned usable questionnaires: 109 homeowners and 64 tenants of sheltered housing schemes. The study findings are presented in four sections: issues for older women who are homeowners; the experiences of older women in sheltered accommodation in the London Borough of Lewisham; building design issues and interest in sheltered accommodation; and ethnic minority perspectives on housing for older people. While the views and experiences given are representative only of those involved in the study, the genuine concerns of older women in Lewisham are reflected. (RH).
