AnnotationPre-senile, early, or younger onset dementia is arbitrarily defined as beginning before age 65. This study investigates and compares early onset dementia of various types, and attempts to provide clear information on their outlook. The Lothian Postgraduate Case Register was used to identify 126 live patients of various aetiologies with dementia diagnosed before age 65. Each had two assessments approximately one year apart. Of the 53 males and 73 females (mean age at referral 58), 114 met diagnostic criteria for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 3rd edition dementia: 60 Alzheimer's type; 13 multi-infarct; 14 alcohol-related; 25 in a mixed group overlapping these categories; and 2 in "other" dementia types. By the second assessment, 18 had died, and two refused assessment. Levels of morbidity were high. The alcohol group had a distinct profile, and in general the dementia appeared less severe with minimal deterioration. (RH).
