AnnotationA global demographic transition is under way, at the heart of which is the growth in numbers and proportion of older people, and the worldwide transition from high birth and death rates to low fertility and mortality. The far-reaching economic and social implications of global ageing are beginning to be recognised in both developed and developing countries. This paper describes the main features of the demographic transition and the areas of consequence for social development. It reviews the theory and practice of ageing and its relation to a wider development framework. The second section discusses key social and political issues facing the lives of older people: poverty and social exclusion; human rights; family and community; livelihoods and social and income security; and health and well-being. The paper concludes by highlighting policy implications and suggested actions that could be taken to ensure improvements to the conditions described. (RH).
