Annotation | The legacy of apartheid in South Africa has left older people poorly prepared for old age, as they lack resources and opportunities, and have difficulty remaining part of their family and community. The overall purpose of this research is to contribute to increasing the responsiveness of policies and services to the needs and capabilities of poor and disadvantaged older people in African and other countries. Its research objectives were: to identify the livelihood strategies, perceptions of well-being and contributions of older people to family and community; to influence policy discussions and decision-making on issues which concern older people; and to develop a methodology to enhance the participation of older people in decisions which affect them. The report also summarises the proceedings and resolutions of a national research dissemination workshop held in Johannesburg in August 1999. (RH). |
