| Annotation | Emergency detention of older psychiatric inpatients under the Mental Health Act 1983 appears to have attracted little attention in published studies. This study reviewed applications of section 5(2) and 5(4) of the Mental Health Act 1983 in detaining older inpatients in North Cheshire between 1985-1997. Results showed that 43% of section 5(2) in older psychiatric inpatients were not converted to longer term sections, and that age did not appear to influence the outcome of the section. (AKM). |
