AnnotationThe needs of informal carers in the UK have only recently been recognised in legislation (Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995); in Ireland there has been no such legal recognition. This article provides an overview of UK, Irish and European policy regarding the care of older people, focusing on informal care. A recently launched research study by the South Eastern Health Board, in association with Waterford Institute of Technology and the University of Ulster is briefly described. The study aims to assess the health and social care needs of informal carers of older people, and to measure the differences in carers' lives arising from the experience of caregiving. (AKM).
