AnnotationNORCs (naturally occurring retirement communities) are US housing complexes originally designed for individuals and families who have now "aged in". When first developed, they were not designed for older people, nor did they include social or health support in their remit. The author describes Mutual Redevelopment Houses, a NORC of the Penn South Cooperative in New York City, and its supportive services which help older people to remain in their own homes, as well as to engender a sense of community for residents.
