AnnotationLittle evidence has been published concerning the control and monitoring of medication prescribed for frail older residents in nursing homes in the UK. A recent national audit by the Department of Geriatric Medicine at St George's Hospital Medical School demonstrates that further research in this field is overdue. There is no UK legislation to enforce any kind of national prescribing standards; and recommendations by the Royal Commission of Long Term Care of the Elderly for standards to be monitored seem unlikely to be implemented. The present residents in nursing homes are the very people who fervently supported the NHS from its cradle, and believed it would care for them to the grave. The commentary concludes that they deserve better treatment than that currently been given in NHS long term care. (RH).
