AnnotationSocial housing organisations in European Union (EU) countries are rising to the challenge of providing shelter for older people whose expectations are rising. This report has been compiled at the suggestion of the Finnish government who hosted the 1999 informal meeting of EU housing ministers. It provides ideas for good practice with examples from Scandinavia, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland and the UK. Also included is a section on the work of the HOPE network (Housing for Older People in Europe). Common themes are reflected in the report's main recommendations, that governments and providers should: treat older people as citizens rather than customers; bridge the gap between health and care services; make adequate funding available to support preventive policies; help people stay in their own homes and communities; provide good and affordable public transport; promote use of new technology; provide for minorities; develop and support training schemes; and ask people what they want.
