Annotation | The part played by narrative in the processes of identity construction and reconstruction are considered by focusing on the experience of one occupational group: professional footballers in the UK. From a narrative and life course perspective, the article argues that players' occupational experiences have shaped a particular kind of identity which can be problematic for later well-being. It draws on biographical interviews with former players and players' autobiographical accounts, to illustrate how they have coped with the challenge to find a new identity following retirement from professional football. Some of the article derives from another article by the author, "More than a game: the experiences of being a professional footballer in Britain" (Oral History, vol 25, Spring 1997). (RH). |
