Population review of 1998: England and Wales

AnnotationThe main features of the population of England and Wales in 1998 are outlined, accompanied by some trend data for the previous 10 years. Of particular interest is information on age structure. An age/sex profile graph (Figure 1) for 1998 shows the effects of the post-war and 1960s baby boom, with peaks at ages 33 and 51. Table A shows how the age distribution of the population has changed between 1991 and 1998. The number of people of pensionable age has increased by 108,000 (1.1%). Within this, numbers have increased in the 75-84 and 85+ age groups - due to the baby boom after the First World War and improvements in life expectancy. The decline in the 60/65-74 year olds reflects the period of low fertility in the 1930s. Figure 7, on age-specific death rates as a percentage of rates for 1988-1998 shows a decline in death rates for most age/gender groups. (RH).
