Annotation | The need for respite care among informal caregivers has been well documented, however, it has proven difficult to establish the precise benefits for caregivers using quantitative analysis. This study used qualitative methods to determine 23 carers' views about the benefits or otherwise of respite care. The major benefits of respite care emerged as two themes: normality and freedom to the carer. The particular component of respite care that was most valued was the option of a home-sitting service. Conversely, it was also perceived in critical terms if there was any shortfall between the quality of professional care compared to their own informal care. However high the quality of respite care, many carers felt that this care might be viewed as a signal that they were no longer able to cope. (AKM). |
