Annotation | The Sonning Common Health Walks Scheme was devised by Dr William Bird, an Oxfordshire general practitioner (GP), and developed particularly for older people. The scheme has led to a number of other similar group walks initiatives in other parts of the country and a Government-backed national strategy for walking. This article describes how the Health Walks Initiative evolved, its physical and social benefits for older people and others, and the evaluation carried out by the Oxford Centre for Health Care Research and Evaluation at Oxford Brookes University.
