Annotation | Severe dementia is characterised as the late or advanced stage of primary or secondary dementia. However, in the past twenty years, much research has focused on the early phases of dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The severe, devastating stage, covering a great part of the natural course of the disease is very under-researched: a MEDLINE search of the last five years has shown that of 15,641 papers on dementia, only 986 (6%) investigated severe dementia. This editorial cites papers on identification of severe cases (including cognitive tests), prevalence, and costs of severe dementia. The scientific community and health care organisers need persuading to invest more time and money to improve dementia patients' quality of life. Three areas are recommended: research, assistance, and education. (RH). |
