Annotation | Longitudinal predictors of physically and verbally non-aggressive inappropriate behaviours were examined in 200 older Americans living in the community and attending day-care centres. Models based on ratings obtained from staff members and family caregivers were compared. Multiple factors contributed simultaneously to the prediction of non-aggressive behaviours. Similar to previous cross-sectional results, physically non-aggressive behaviours were predicted mainly by good health and cognitive impairment. In addition, depression emerged consistently as a predictor of physically non-aggressive behaviours in all models. Verbally non-aggressive behaviours were predicted by depressed affect and pain, confirming previous suggestions that these behaviours were related to discomfort. The relationships of these behaviours with cognitive functioning was relatively weak. Understanding the aetiologies of non-aggressive problem behaviours can help in developing appropriate care for this population. (RH). |
