AnnotationAlzheimer's disease (AD) family caregivers suffer from psychological and physical morbidity associated with the care of the AD patient. This Spanish research compares stress and psychological morbidity suffered by family caregivers of AD patients and family caregivers of aged non-demented chronically ill patients. The impact of cognitive and non-cognitive patient symptoms on caregivers is also explored. 58 caregivers of AD patients and 32 other caregivers were studied. Compared to controls, stress and psychological morbidity were higher in AD caregivers. Behavioural symptoms and impairment in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) were associated with caregiver stress. Length of care was also associated with psychological morbidity. Caregiver stress may be reduced with special attention paid to treatment and management of behavioural and functional impairment in the AD patient. Caregiver education and coping skills should also be included. (RH).
