Annotation | Priorities for health and social services for the next two years are outlined under five general headings: improving health (smoking, drugs, and teenage pregnancies); saving lives (cancer, coronary heart disease, and stroke); fast and convenient services (waiting lists and times, and primary health care); caring for vulnerable people (mental health, older people's services, and children's services); and modernising strategies (quality, staff and information technology). Four priorities are outlined for older people's services. First, a multi-disciplinary audit of existing services for older people to be carried out, in preparation to implement the National Service Framework (NSF) for Older People (to be published in Autumn 2000). Second, joint local charters for long-term care in line with "Better care, higher standards", by June 2000. The third is to implement a jointly agreed preventative strategy by March 2002 (reference made to LAC(99)14); and as part of a strategic approach, continue to improve rehabilitation services for older people. Lastly, by March 2002, to provide more diverse and flexible opportunities for carers to have a break, in line with "Caring about carers" (reference made to LAC(99)13). (RH). |
